Since January, I’ve been working as an A&R intern for Musicbed through a practicum course at school. Through this, I’ve learned a lot about sync licenses, how they work, and the various deal terms that can be found within a sync contract. My first assignment was to come up with five unsigned artists that I think would be suitable for Musicbed’s roster.
One of those artists being May The Muse. I found her through watching COLORS YouTube videos. If you’re looking for new artists, I’ve found COLORS to be a really good resource. They post videos pretty often, and they highlight artists from all over with music in many different languages too - you’ll find popular artists featured like Alicia Keys, Freddie Gibbs, and ScHoolboy Q, but honestly a lot of the videos posted are of artists I have never heard of, which I love.
May The Muse is an alternative singer/songwriter based in Berlin. The first song I heard from her was “Awake” on A COLORS SHOW, a single from her forthcoming EP. Her voice stood out to me because it isn’t a sound that I often come across. There’s a soulful edginess in her tone that was really intriguing to me after the first few lines I heard. Her Spotify bio says that when she was younger, she actually got kicked out of choir because her voice didn’t fit in. She’s got a powerful voice.
I’m curious about her artistic influences, because I feel like it could be a pretty wide range of artists - I hear a bit of Florence Welch in some of her higher notes, specifically in this live performance. Her sound isn’t easily categorizable to me, and that's something I admire.
